Challenge

HVAC is roughly half of hotel energy consumption, costing $2,000–$3,500 per room per year. Smart meters and intelligent HVAC systems can cut energy consumption by 20–30%, but standalone smart-room systems create new silos. Smoke/alarm escalation notices often run on legacy systems disconnected from staff workflows. Distributed AC closets and multiple UPS units also inflate retrofit electrical scope and cost.

Cisco Solution

Cisco-Panduit Fault Managed Power—the first UL-1400-1 certified DC power architecture—delivers up to 600W per copper pair  up to 2 km, replacing distributed AC closets and UPS units with a centralized DC microgrid while adding approximately roughly 15% energy savings at the distribution layer. CW9172H Wi-Fi 7 wall-plate access points with built-in BLE support in-room sensors connectivity. Meraki MT environmental sensors, Cisco Spaces for room status and smoke/alarm orchestration, Meraki MV for visual confirmation, and Splunk Observability for sensor and power-receiver health complete this architecture.

Business Impact

Energy cost per occupied room (ECPOR) declines, energy savings align with the 20–30% industry range,  smoke/alarm response times improve,  and avoided renovation capex from the FMP DC microgrid creates an additional source of annualized savings. For a median upscale resort, the combined Run and Protect value can easily reach the mid six figures annually.

HOSPITALITY OPPORTUNITY #5

Optimize energy, sustainability, and smart-room operations

Ensure seamless and rich Wi-Fi digital guest experiences

  • Kimpton London deployed Cisco temperature sensors across hot boxes and cold storage, using real-time alerts to help prevent food spoilage. The same telemetry approach can be extended to room-level energy and ESG reporting.
